It was so perfect that our first harvest fell on the Summer Solstice. It wasn't much to start, but we had a great time picking the first sweet tomatoes of summer. The jalapenos are growing like crazy. I picked three green and left a couple to turn red. I have never had a red jalapeno. It's not something you can get at the supermarket.

That is probably my favorite part about growing my own veggies. By growing my own food I am getting organic vegetables that I can't find in the store for pennies per pound. If I could find them they would be too expensive!
We are now keeping track of our harvest in the column on the left sidebar. I want to know how much loot I got this summer so we are weighing every harvest. We will see how much we get this year!We also harvested some shallots. Shallots are another yummy luxury item that I rarely buy at the store. They are so easy to grow. You can put them in a pot and harvest the green tops while the bulbs grow. Two veggies in one! Today I ate some of them in my salad and again on my chicken.
Rosemary is my favorite herb ever. It has the most intoxicating scent. Spicy, heady and perfect for almost anything made of chicken or lamb. It is even being researched for cancer prevention. I bundled up this bunch with some cotton yarn and hung it on the chandelier over the table to dry. When its completely dried out I will pull the leaves off and put them in a glass spice jar to use for cooking.
The tomatoes... oh the tomatoes! I have said it many times before, nothing beats a homegrown tomato. These did not disappoint. I urge you all to run out and buy a patio tomato right now. At least one. Keep it in a pot on your deck, your front porch, or anywhere you have 6 hours of daylight. I promise you will not regret it.
Yum! I was JUST going to ask what those onion-shaped ones were...but you put it all in the left-side column! GREAT idea! Your first harvest looks spicy and delicious -- I'm sorry to tell you that I have nothing beyond herbs to harvest yet. But, I am water-spraying aphids every day....they don't count as harvest. ;-)
Rosemary is my favorite, too. For all the reasons you said.
Thanks, also, by the way for listing out those skirt and knitting patterns in your Solstice Post....I looked through each and every one -- that 'Made' blog is wonderful!
