Thank you for the comments and emails about Demeter. I am going to miss her. I never liked birds very much growing up. I was bitten on the cheek by a macaw when I was 9. That pretty much ruined birds for me. Since we started working with the falcons last year I have discovered how much personality they can have. I always saw hawks and falcons as one step away from a Velociraptor. Notice the ending raptor.
I saw Jurassic Park. I know what those things can do. It kinda creeps me out to have a raptor in my living room. Long ago Tom's mother told me that she felt like one was going to peck out her eye while she slept. This would never really happen, but I think I know what she meant.
I love working with them now. Turns out they can be really sweet. Demeter was one of those sweet ones.
A few hours after I found out about Demeter I was still upset and found myself wandering around my garden pulling countless mushrooms and the occasional weed. It was nice to see the beginnings of what might be my best and largest garden yet. Seeing the result of my efforts made me feel better.
I am growing the garden of giants. I don't know what got into me, but I got a tiny piece of my own land called a backyard and went into Gigantor mode. I have a giant pumpkin, giant watermelon, corn, 6 foot tall sunflowers, tomato plants that promise 3-4 pound tomatoes! Plus all the beans, cantaloupe, squash and zucchini I could want.
I have a problem though. I still have a whole bag of soil left over. One of the white ones I like to use as a planter.
I don't know what else to plant. I am thinking about trying to grow some summer greens. I have been reading that I can get lettuce seeds that do well in hot weather, but I am worried I will just waste the bed growing something that will die in 3 weeks when the temps hit 100 degrees.
Maybe I should go with a cucumber? I don't think I planted one of those yet. Do you all have any ideas?
In case you want to know. The white bags in front have watermelon, cantaloupe, squash, zucchini, and beans. Behind that in the purple bag are two peppers (doing great!), rosemary, parsley and thyme. The two next to that are tomatoes as well as the two bags directly behind those.
Off in the top left corner is where the Three Sisters
garden is. A giant 100 pound pumpkin, corn and beans.
The sunflower patch is just out of frame on the left side.
There are two more tomatoes in the white tubs on the table along with a
pot of beans and another pot of something, but I cant remember what it was. It
looks like a melon. I need to learn to use markers!
I cant wait to see what this place looks like in the middle of August. Can you imagine!?
